Joppa Outreach is a non-profit organization reaching homeless people in unique ways; in tents and shacks, in doorways and abandoned buildings, in cars and under bridges.  Wherever unsheltered people are living, volunteers visit with them weekly, building relationships, providing humanitarian aid and helping with specific needs.

There are as many reasons for homelessness as there are homeless people.  Some have lost jobs or family members; some have had accidents or unfortunate medical issues; some are war veterans and young adults with no support system; addictions and mental illness are prevalent.

Operating entirely on donations from individuals, families, and a few concerned organizations, Joppa volunteers serve over 200 unsheltered homeless people with more on the streets each week.
Our goal is to eliminate homelessness one person at a time.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

JDRF is the leader in research leading to a cure for type 1 diabetes in the world.  It sets the global agenda for diabetes research, and is the largest charitable funder and advocate of diabetes science worldwide.

The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.  Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly, and can be fatal.  Until a cure is found, people with type 1 diabetes have to test their blood sugar and give themselves insulin injections multiple times or use a pump - each day, every day of their lives.  And even with that intensive care, insulin is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications, which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation.

Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.3 billion to diabetes research, including more than $156 million in FY2008.  In FY2008, the Foundation funded more than 1,000 centers, grants in laboratories, hospitals, and industry, and fellowships in 22 countries.

Military Heroes Campaign

Kappa Sigma's Military Heroes Campaign was designed to honor and aid the thousands of wounded military veterans returning from active duty. The campaign focuses, in particular, on providing charitable assistance to the Fisher House Foundation, a segment of the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund that provides free housing to wounded veterans and their families throughout the duration of rehabilitation.

The Fisher House Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides a network of 38 comfort homes on the grounds of military and VA major medical centers. The houses are 5,000 to 16,000 square foot units, with up to 21 suites, donated to the military and Department of Veterans Affairs. The Foundation provides support to families of patients receiving care at the nearby medical center. Further information on the work of Fisher House Foundation, can be found at www.fisherhouse.org or by calling 888-294-8560.

Since 1981, the Northeast Iowa Food Bank has provided nutritious food and grocery products to individuals, families and non-profit organizations in Northeast Iowa. Our mission is accomplished through our 5 programs. The Cedar Valley Food Pantry provides food and grocery products to an average of nearly 1,100 families, on a monthly basis, in Black Hawk County. The Member Agency Distribution program provides food and grocery products to 200 qualified non-profit organizations in 16 Northeast Iowa counties. Last year we distributed over 5 million lbs. of product. Kids Cafe is an after-school program that has provided over 65,000 meals, snacks, and activities to children through 4 year-round sites and 2 summer snack programs in Black Hawk County. The Elderly Nutrition Box program, in collaboration with Hawkeye Valley Area Agency on Aging, provides over 500 food boxes to elderly and homebound seniors in 10 counties on a monthly basis. Operation Family Pack, in collaboration with the Waterloo Community School District, provides back packs of food to children and families in need. Last year over 1,000 meal sacks were distributed through this program.
